Pigment preparations are made by mixing a pigment paste or aq. pigment suspension contg. >=30. % of pigment, with an aq. polymer suspension contg. at 30-200 degrees C. Prods have excellent dispersing properties and are free from pigments aggregates which lead to uneven distribution of pigment. Suitable polymers are (co)polymers of olefins, dienes, styrene, (meth)acrylic acid, 7meth)acfylamide, (meth)acrylonitrile, vinyl esters, vinyl ethers, vinyl alcohol, vinyl ketones, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride maleic anhydride, maleic acid, fumaric acid, a polyamide, polyesters, polyurethanes or ABS, with a particle size of 0.01-20 mu, esp. 0.05-10 mu. The dispersion may also contain liquefaction agents such as alkali metal polyphosphates, lignosulphonates and basic salts of trivalent polyphosphates, lignosulphonates and basic salts of trivalent metals, and dispersing agents such as alkali metal polyphosphates alkylamines, alkanolamines, ammonium-or alkali metal salts of fatty acids and alkali metal polyacrylates.
